Human Beings are Interested in the Answers to Some Fundamental Questions
  • Human beings are driven by a need to ask some fundamental questions or ultimate questions. This phenomenon makes up their spiritual orientation.
  • Some of these questions are: Why was I born? What’s the meaning of life? What’s the meaning of my life? Why should I keep on striving against the odds? Why should I go on and on when I don’t feel like it because I’m tired or I’m depressed or I’m defeated? Is it all worthwhile?
  • Human beings have a perennial longing to find meaning and value of their work and experience.
  • Human beings have a longing to see their being in this world in a larger context, a meaning-giving context. Their sphere may vary from being a family man to being a professional or a community member, a social worker, a hobbyist, a club member and what have you.
  • Human beings have longing for something toward which they can aspire- something that can take them beyond themselves and beyond the present moment.. They truly aspire for something that can give them and their work a sense of worth.
  • The efforts put in by the human beings to find answers to the fundamental or ultimate questions and direct themselves to work in consonance with these answers sharpens their spiritual intelligence.
SQ or Spiritual Intelligence: All about Playing with Boundaries
  • IQ (rational thinking) and EQ (emotional intelligence) work within the boundaries- it’s limited, it’s finite.
  • On the other hand, SQ (spiritual intelligence) empowers human beings to play with the boundaries- and that’s unlimited, that’s infinite.
  • SQ thus empowers human beings to change the rules, to become creative and to play with the situations and even alter them.
  • SQ allows the human beings to ask if they want to be in that particular situation in the first place. Shouldn’t they rather change the situation or even create a better situation? They steer the situation rather than working within the boundaries of a given one.
  • SQ enables the human beings to differentiate between many possible alternatives.
  • SQ empowers the human beings to undertake the moral responsibility to temper with the rigidity if needed for the larger good.
  • Human beings then use the SQ to wrestle with the questions of good and not so good (evil, at times) and envisage unexplored and unrealized possibilities. SQ empowers the human beings to dream, to aspire and to extricate them out of the rut.
Using SQ
SQ is useful in the following:
  • To become more creative
  • To deal with the existential problems more effectively
  • To practice any religion more intelligently sans narrowness, exclusiveness, bigotry or prejudice
  • To inherit the spiritual qualities and use them without adhering to any religious rituals
  • To integrate the intrapersonal and the interpersonal thus transcending the gap between self and others
  • To move ahead to become a developed person- a person who lives life at deeper level of meaning
  • To sort out the good from evil and life from death
  • To develop greater understanding of the fundamental reasons behind human sufferings and despair
